Jazz Sketch Night #3

I made it back out to the Society of Illustrators the other night for a little bit of life drawing. It was a good time, especially since Stephen, Angie, and Monika were there. I'd missed them all quite a bit. Here's to making a more regular habit of sketch night.

Jazz Sketch Night #2

Went to sketch night at the Society last night, where I met up with the ever-delightful Stephen Gardner. It was such a treat to kick back and draw and have a beer with my favorite Englishman.

Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground

This is the preliminary drawing for a scratchboard I'll be working on over the weekend. It's a portrait of the band the White Stripes surrounded by birch trees.

I was watching
with one eye on the other side
I had fifteen people telling me to move
I got moving on my mind
I found shelter
In some thoughts turning wheels around
I said 39 times that I love you
to the beauty I had found

FIT Network Article

I was mentioned in an article in the Spring/Summer 2007 edition of FIT Network, a publication for FIT alumni. It discusses my involvement in a Dante event where I discussed my take on the imagery from the Inferno. My ink sketch for Circle II accompanies the article.

Jazz Sketch Night #1

Last night, I went to the Society for their Jazz Sketch Night for the first time. It was such a good time, and it was great to reconnect with a few buddies from FIT. Shout outs to Steve, Ed, Suzanne, and Scott. It was a lovely evening.

Drawing, the Language of Vision

Burt Silverman has a drawing DVD out now with a very familiar looking model. Oh, wait...That's me.

Burt taught a five week session during the FIT Illustration Master's program, which is how I came to know him. He's a fantastic teacher, no doubt about it. He does two drawings of me in the DVD, one in graphite and one in white and black on tonal paper. It's available for sale by Singnilar Art Videos, if anyone is interested.

It was such a fascinating experience to pose for Burt. It's even more interesting to be able to go back and watch the process unfold. To top off his mastery of drawing, his eloquent way with words shines through in the video as well.

The Amazing Cathie Bleck

I met with Cathie Bleck today to help her take down her incredible show. In case you missed it, it will be going up again at 4 Times Square in August. I contacted Cathie while working on my thesis, in which her work played an integral role. She's been my favorite illustrator since I started using scratchboard, so getting to know her has been such a treat. On top of that, she's one of the kindest, most generous people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. Her gorgeous scratchboards are an extra layer of icing on the cake. It was great to spend the day with her, and her advice and encouragment was completely invaluable.

I have a new addition to the family.
No, no, no...not anything like that. It's a Siberian Kitten.  By my calculations, he's the cutest kitten ever.
